Our family room is definitely the place where we spend the most time in our home. It was my favorite room from the first time I stepped foot in this house. I love the set of old, thick, wooden french doors that lead into the room and I love the big windows that get light from three sides. I knew it would be the place where we would opened presents on Christmas morning, where we would snuggle up to watch movies and eat popcorn, where pillow forts would be built, where we would hang out as a family. On weekend mornings we keep the back door open with the screen door in place and light floods the room from early in the morning. It is also the room where we shared our first meal here. A fancy little picnic {packed by my Mum} spread out on the hardwood floor. We had added a pair of new chandeliers, built in bookcases and multiple fresh coats of paint, but our furniture wasn't due to arrive till the next day. We were only a family of three then and I loved that it was the first memory made in this house. The room still has mostly old furniture. A 15 {gulp} year old couch, the antique table that served as our first dining room table together in our apartment in Boston, and many old books, sentimental paintings and artwork. The couch is in need of replacing but I swear it is the comfiest couch of all time, so more urgent decorating has taken priority. However, nothing kicks in my nesting instinct quite like the arrival of autumn and I felt the room was due for a little fluffing and that's what I did recently with new pillows, lamp shade, and rug. Thought you'd enjoy a peek...

So pretty, Tessa! The print looks like a coral/pink. Am I correct? I'd love those shades incorporated into our living room. Such nice details on the pillow!! Your seamstress is a gem.
ReplyDeletethanks, girl! the pillows are more of a coral/orangey color. it is called "guava". the small lisa fine print may be one of my all time favorite fabrics. i'd even wear it in a skirt if i could. :)
DeleteThose pillows are scrumptious! Love the fabric and the lamp shade...and the sweet story behind it all.
ReplyDeletelove everything about your space. It screams "take a seat and stay awhile"!
ReplyDeletei love what you've done in this room! i especially love the drapes layered over the bamboo blinds. can i ask where you got your blinds? i'm in the process of getting some for my home and have been scouring the internet for feedback on bamboo blinds. ~becky
ReplyDeleteah, becky, they are great and they no longer carry them! i ordered them ages ago from "smart bargains". i am ordering a new one for the DR and just requested samples from select blinds.com, their prices and selection look good.
Deletethanks for the info! let me know what you think of your sample from blinds.com :) ~becky
DeleteTessa I just adore your style and your home! This room is so beautiful yet so comfortable looking! I strive for this in my home! I really cant wait to see your beautiful kitchen makeover! ~Leslie~
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I love the neutral colors used in your big base pieces in the room... it gives you so much flexibility with your accent fabrics and colors! Since your family room gets used in the same manner ours does, I have a quick question for you. We're getting ready to replace the horrible carpet in our family room with hardwoods and I'd love to do a natural fiber rug like jute or seagrass. Yours looks similar to what I've looked at... how comfortable is it? Especially for little boy knees and pillow forts?? Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletethanks! the rug in our family room is a cheapy from ikea. it's not that soft. usually i have a patterned wool rug layered over top, but i had just vacuumed when i took the pic so it was still rolled up. we do have a jute and wool rug in the playroom that has the same look from pottery barn. it is super soft and wears great. here is a link: http://www.potterybarn.com/products/chunky-wool-jute-rug/?pkey=cnatural-fiber-rugs
Deletei love that they do not have fabric orders which tend to stain and wear out too quickly with my kids. i will eventually get one like it for the family room too!
LOVE the pillows with the box pleat! It's the little things that make me swoon. I want to cozy right up in that room with you! Thought of you today as I stayed in my nightie and enjoyed a new favorite book. Just posted it on my blog with a link (you'll want to own it), but here's the title: The Great American House.
ReplyDeleteVery, very pretty! Love the fabrics you picked out for your pillows. The room certainly looks cozy and I am sure your family appreciates and enjoys such a beautiful room (and home).
ReplyDeleteJulia
This room is beautiful...so comfortable and just I dont know lovely for sure..Cheers Frances
ReplyDeletewill you PLEASE keep posting pictures of your home!!! I get so excited when you do, we have such similar tastes! Thanks for your comment on my instagram too :) Made my day! Melaine
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful, Tessa. You really have great taste. The pillows are so lovely! I can't wait until my children are old enough so I can have nice fabric covered pillows and not have to worry about drool and runny noses!! :) But, I'm soaking it all in b/c I know it won't last long!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous as always! You're so good at filling in spaces and making them look cozy rather than cluttered. This is where I fail miserably and why my house is very empty! I just love your style. Can't wait to see that kitchen!!
ReplyDeleteWell I certainly feel cozy...what a beautiful room - love the pillows and so much attention to detail and the colors...perfect!
ReplyDeleteLooks very cozy! Your new pillows are beautiful. Looks like a great place for the family to hang out!
ReplyDeletexoxo,
Kim
It's pretty! I love your neutral palette.
ReplyDeleteLooks very pretty! Can't say I would ever spend that much on a lampshade (wowzers!) but I does give nice inspiration to draw from. Thank you for sharing your lovely home!
ReplyDeleteKate
I don't have much to add that wasn't already said! Your living room just screams, enjoy a hot cup of tea and a lengthy conversation in me (once the boys are in bed, that is). You do a great job of achieving coziness and elegance at the same time.
ReplyDeleteThat's a cozy room! I especially like the last photo. Love the blinds and curtains, the zebra pillow, the rug, the basket. It all works so nicely together.
ReplyDeleteClaudia
What a stunning room. So cozy. Makes me want to curl up on your couch with a good book and a glass of wine - true bliss!
ReplyDeleteYour home is lovely.
Tessa, I love following your blog. DId you have the curtains made? I want to have bamboo shades with curtains on each end but am not sure where to start for the curtains. Thanks for your help. Cathy
ReplyDeletehi cathy, yes, the curtains were custom made. the fabric is parchment linen from the susan kasler line at ballard. the drapes are 1.5x the fabric width with french pleats at the top. try "select blinds" for their bamboo shades. you can order free swatches to make sure you get the color and style you want. hope that helps! tessa
DeleteTessa, you have truly made your house into a home. It is just lovely. Is there a name for those pleats on your pillows? I want to have that added to some pillows I am getting ready to have made and am not sure what to ask for. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteThank you! It's a box pleat ruffle. I would bring your seamstress a picture so there is no confusion. I ALWAYS bring pictures!! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Tessa. I have that fabric on chairs. I love it. Perfect! It such a high quality fabric I think for the price point (we are in CA, so everything is through the roof here). I am excited to see your kitchen reveal. Another question. On your kitchen shades where did you order the fabric. I love it also.
ReplyDeletethe raspberry check? it's no longer up. i still like it so much, but it didn't feel right in the new kitchen. i'm having new ones made out of a lisa fine fabric. the check fabric on the old shades came from a store called the Fabric Shack in Waynesville, OH. It was about 6 years ago. They have a website {i think} but they do not give out the manufacture's name so I would have no idea where to start. sorry.
DeleteI think I meant the ones that are going in your kitchen. It has a paisley I think.
ReplyDeleteI love it, Tessa. Soooo cozy. I envy the charm of your lived it home. You've inspired me to have new pillows made... now just have to decide on the fabrics!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pillows! Love your family room and can't wait to see your kitchen! Great choices!
ReplyDeleteMichelle
beautiful cozying up you did....I'd love to see a full shot of this room.....you've balanced it so well, it seems....
ReplyDeleteTessa, You have such a beautiful home...do you mind me asking where you got the basket under the table in your family room..is that the beachcombers basket from Pottery Barn? I also love the blue and white urn and am having trouble finding one like yours...I am sure the painting to the right of the table is an antique but if it is not would love to know where you found that..thankyou for sharing your home...love it
ReplyDeletethanks sooo much! the basket under the table is from homegoods a couple years ago. my blue and white ginger jars are from all over, some antique, some new. Rustic Rooster in California has a great selection and will ship. Wisteria also has some really pretty ones that can be ordered online. The oil painting is an antique bought from a local dealer. {england, circa 1800}

Seriously magazine worthy! Just Beautiful! Leslie
ReplyDeleteWhat size are your pillows? 26 in. square?
ReplyDeletePillow covers ate 22x22 but I use 26x26 down inserts from Ikea to keep them extra full.
DeleteGoodness. I've missed a lot not reading blogs in about a month! I've pinned a few things today from you. Love it all!!!! xo
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolutely lovely and charming kitchen! ...and cozy family room. A lot of care and thought went in to your rooms. I love how your decorating efforts are in keeping with the style of your home. Thank you for sharing!
