Painting Our House Chronicles

It's crunch time.
T minus 3 weeks and counting.
Oh, I was soooo sure I knew what colors to paint our house.
I might have bragged about how easily I came to the decision.
Piece of cake.
For once I wasn't going to over analyze.
I should know better.
At the moment (2:00 PM Thursday, August 25th), I want this....

Care to guess those paint colors??
While I can find pretty pics, I don't have sources.
Is that a charcoal gray?
Are those shutters a super dark navy?
Thankfully, I've got a trim color I love that is very close to this.
HELLLLP!

  1. Looks like a grey/green mix to me. It's a beautiful color combination though. And the house isn't too shabby either (:

  4. Painting the outside of a house has to be one of the most stressful things - especially if you are completely changing the color scheme. I have been know to go knocking on doors in the neighborhood to ask their colors, so if you see me wandering around with paint chips in my hand - holding them up against your house....no worries - I'm just trying to match you color. good luck with that project - I'm sure the results will be great.

  6. those colors are gorgeous!! it's so stressful picking out exterior colors - i even went to a color specialist and ended up getting her input. i ended up not liking her recommendations & finally picked what i liked. so happy i did. good luck!

  7. Hello,

We painted the front of the house last year and it was very stressful for me. We stained the shingles a gray color and wanted to offset the gray with a calm and cool color. We went with Wedgewood gray by BM for the clapboard (blue/grey) and a sailcloth color for the trim. At first I thought it was too bright and I got all nervous about it. Then went to the paint store for them to make it a little darker. By the end of this process it all turned out well. I just thought it was the most difficult thing to decide because it's the outside of the house and it would have to keep for a long time. Have fun and I wish you well. The colors look great in that picture.
    Take care,
    Claudia

    1. Claudia, Do you have a picture of your house? My house color is Wedgewood gray, but I am having a problem finding a trim color. BM suggests that I go with Montpelier AF-555 or Nocturnal Gray to make it pop, but I see you have sailcloth and you like it. I would love to see! marnejo@ymail.com

  8. gorgeous color~
when do you have to decide for sure?

it's so hard picking exterior colors..

did you read Melaine's dilemma over at My Sweet Savannah? They stained their entire home and didn't like it, so now they are having it re-done. YUCK.

I think that might be on the list of worst nightmares.

  9. Good luck! Our shutters are perhaps a similar color. They are black with maybe a slight dark green tint. I can look up the color if you are interested; it is from Sherwin Williams.

  10. I've delayed the house painting for 5+ years because Of the stress of getting it right. I know the basics - a natural limestone-like neutral with blue gray window trim (wish we could have shutters), but getting it EXACTLY right is sooooo hard! I hope you nail it! Paint samples first...and look at it in different light/sides of the house.

  11. I'm in agreement with Heather--those shutters look like what Carolinians call Charleston Green, which can be made with nine parts black and one part yellow or, much more safely, purchased from SW or Benjamin Moore. Love the picture!

  12. Love the photo but sadly I'm of little help. I say stalk a paint store, and bring home as many samples as possible. After a bad paint choice {on my part} I'd do just about anything to avoid a repeat of my mistake :)

    Good luck ~

  13. I have found the best way is to ask the guy at the BM paint store for advice. He has always helped me in a pinch. Good luck!

  15. That is so pretty! I drooled over when you pinned it but didnt realize you were considering it for your own house. After all of our remodel trials and tribulations I'd say take that photo on good quality photo paper to a paint retailer and ask them to match it. We could an almost identical color from Sherwin Williams here in California and I dont think we'd have gotten anywhere near it by guessing on our own. Good Luck!!!

  17. What an elegant painting. Who made this? The angle of the shot made it look perfect! This is one of the best house pictures I've ever seen.
